![]() Hello and Welcome to ThamesRacing.com Temz Blog
20MAR07 I've got the truck back at the house now. We recently had the master cylinder and linkage mounted in the floor along with the gas pedal, dash, seat, and all brake lines. I will be headed back to NRFK soon to have the front end completed as well as headers, windows, wheelie bars, etc. Stay tuned as we will make it to the track this year!
28JUL06
The truck was painted a few months back
and is now at the house in the race car trailer. I'm waiting to get the headers fabricated and the finishing touches done so we can possibly hit the track sometime this
millenium!. Meanwhile, we have gone out to Langley Speedway the last two Wednesdays. The first Wednesday we were spectators and this past Wednesday we raced
the Le Baron. It was a real trip and a couple times I thought I was going to loose it but it held together. We are looking into mounting some camers in the Le Baron so
that we can capture some of the race footage. I think that we could produce some really interesting videos. We have also been going out on the Supra and capturing
some wakeboarding and wakeskating footage. I need to go ahead and edit the footage and get it up here on the site. Basically, it has been one hell of a busy summer.
Lastly, make sure you check out the links page. I have all sorts of links to many differnent topics so check it out.
09APR06 We are waiting for the truck to get finished at the body shop right now. Seems that there are some technical difficulties
right now in the paint booth so we are a bit hung up; however, this has given me time to gather many of the
remaining parts that have been needed for the truck such as the tires, rims, valve covers, NOS plate, etc. Also, I have
had REAL good luck selling the parts that we are not using this year such as the Super Victor with the 4150 flange.
I just uploaded some new pics of the 430 ci engine and I should get a few more uploaded soon. I had to go through
all the old parts because the used converter that I bought will not work. Soooo, I had to buy a new Coan Engineering
converter and I hate buying things that I didn't plan for!!
22MAR06
I just finished uploading the snowboarding videos, drag race video from 18MAR06 at the OBX, and a short
wakeboarding clip. Also, I have been working all last week and a couple hours last night
to transition all the truck photos to the new photo gallery. Click on photos to go to the new gallery.
We will be traveling to Fredericksburg, VA, this Saturday afternoon to pick up the engine from John Finch.
Within in the next couple weeks, I will pick up the truck from Quint so that I can work on mounting the engine,
tranny, and do some wiring. Once I'm done, we'll take the truck back to the body shop to have the front clip
assembled. Look for some good updates real soon and sign the guestbook as you are coming through. 14MAR06
I have been working on a new online photo gallery for the site that is just totally awesome. Follow here for the link. You are able to view, rate, and post comments on the pictures. 13MAR06
Alright Alright Alright... you asked for updates now I'm gonna give them to you. I have been working down in the trenches
for quite sometime now trying to get all the parts necessary to get the truck up and running sometime this decade. What this equates to is this:
the truck is in the Quint's body shop off 38th street in Norfolk. We are going to PA this weekend to finally retrieve the motor,
and I am continuing to order parts until I'm out of cash flow. In the meantime, I have captured some excellent footage of Wayne
and Rob down at the OBX Speedway this past weekend. Goto the videos page and check out the new vids. 25MAY05
It's been quite some time since a good update has been made to the site. The tube chassis for the truck is now complete. Wayne
has been working on the interior. John Finch has the new motor at his shope in PA so we should have that down here shortly. Go to the 383
page and check out all the updated photos down at the bottom. 11DEC04
We made it out to the new Outerbanks
Dragway this morning. The track is very nice and should be finished
by the beginning of the next race season. Go to the videos page to see
some of the footage. By the way, I destroyed the transmission at the
track today. Seems that this must be the stickiest track that I have
ever run.
08OCT04 I put up new videos from 24SEP04 at Hertford and I put up some new videos from last night at
Hertford of Wayne Smith. Check them out. Meanwhile, I'm getting things together for our next trip to the track. I'll
be working on a NOS fuel recirc line, some spark plug boot insulators, and a few other things. Check out the videos page
for the new material.
10SEP04 We went to the Maryland track on Labor
Day and what started out as a really bad day got much, much better. Once
again, I had a bad spark plug which had me looking at everything from
fuel flow, jet sizes... I looked at everything but the spark plugs. I
found the bad plug, replaced it, and the truck began to run fine. The
first run was 11.1 at 117 on the motor. I determined it was now time to
spray the juice and see what it would do on a 100 HP shot from off the
line to the end of the track. This time it ran 10.7. So.... I wanted to
try the 180 after I got out of the hole and we left with a best of 10.2
at 127 for the day. click here
to see the time slips and here
to see the video of our last run at 10.43 at 126MPH.

The roll cage is now complete. Wayne from O and O welding completed the cage for me on last Tuesday. On Saturday, Wayne helped me with
relocating the upper shock mount, installing the new wheel tubs, and the seat brackets. I got the seat mounted last night and got the seat
belt into place. Now, I'm just working on getting the Lexan for the back window and just getting everything in shape so we can hit the track
on Friday and maybe Sunday too.
22JUL04
We made it to the track on the 16th of July. The best run was 7.03 at 98 mph in the 1/8th mile at the Northeast Dragway in Hertford, North
Carolina. We really had a great night and the truck ran flawlessly. I even picked up a tenth when I took off the alternator belt. Thanks goes
out to Steve for the great videos and being there for me!

The truck is finally operating at 100%! The following is the troubleshooting that I performed while looking
to see what the problem was: cleaned all the plugs, verified TDC on distributor, took resistence readings on the coil's
magnetic pickup, took resistence readings on the coil, took resistence readings on the plug wires, rerouted the magnetic
pickup wire from the start retard box to the distributor, disconnected the start retard box, and...... the truck still had a miss.
So, I pulled the number 8 plug back out and it was as clean as before I fired up the truck. I then switched the 8 and 2 plugs and grabbed my
digital pyrometer to take temperature readings on the header tubes. I got 500 on 8, 100 on 6, 500 on 4, and 100 on 2.... hummm, two of those plugs
were dead. I had purchased champion plugs at autozone because they were on the list of recommened plugs with the AFR literature.
Yesterday I put in new NGK race plugs from JEGS and the truck fired right up and ran almost perfectly. I had to readjust the carb to get rid
of the fuel smoke. The truck ran great yesterday and I do believe we will be far into the 11's now. I need to plan a trip to the track so look
forward to a great race weekend soon!
29JUN04 Well,
I'm afraid I have to announce that my 1998 LS1 T/A has bit the dust
or should I say smashed into a bridge and the bridge won. The car is
totaled and can be seen on the LS1 page or click
here. The accident happend this past Sunday right outside of Meridian,
MS, on I-59. It had been raining earlier so the roads were still kinda
wet. Needless to say, I hydroplaned, did a 180, and headed right under
an overpass and right into the concrete supports. The car is pretty
much completed destroyed from the doors back (especially on the passenger
side). I'm sad to see the car go but most importantly, we cannot be
replaced and we pretty much walked away without even a visable bruise.
See the pics to get a real understanding. 24JUN04
June has sure turned out to be a great month. I'm been in Mississippi for my high school reunion, which was well worth attending, and I've
rather enjoyed the freedom that I have had during this vacation. We did make it to the Maryland International Raceway back on the 13th of June.
I start from the beginning so I don't leave out anything:
Our first problem was actually when we got to the track: the truck just would not start. How frustrating is it to finally get to the track for
the first test and tune for the year and the truck not start? We took a time out, cleaned the plugs, and got the truck to start. Well, next, I ran
the truck and got like a 13 second run and I noticed that the truck would not shift out of drive. I had melted the plastic sheath that surrounds
the shift cable. We pretty much thought the day was done but I brainstormed for a while and realized that I could wrap the shifter cable with
some rubber house and provide it with a new type of housing.. it worked and off we went back to testing and tuning. I ran the truck some
more and finally got a 12.1 second run on the third try. On the fourth run, the truck missed terribly. I did some research and realized that
the magnetic pickup wire running from the distributor to the MSD box was also routed side by side with the coil high voltage wires... humm, that can
cause interference and missing.... and not to mention fluctuating timing. So, when I return to VA, I'll be troubleshooting the ignition system
and hopefully we will be back at the track in no time. New pics and videos will be posted soon from our recent outing at the truck.
21MAY04
Well, things have been rather interesting over the last month. The flowtech headers that I got in the ceramic coated version sure did fit
great with the iron 993 casting heads; however, with the AFR angle plugged heads, it was a no go. Of course, the last thing to do
after fitting up the new heads, torqueing every bolt, and fitting the headers, was to install the spark plugs. We could only get like 2 plugs
in on each side not to mention we would have burned the boots off the plugs we did get to fit. So.... it was back to the drawing board. I did
a lot of research and found out that the headers that I did have were 1 5/8" primaries and the heads required 1 3/4" primaries so those headers
would not have been right reguardless. I ended up ordering a set of Hedman Headers made for angle plugged heads, 1 3/4" primaries, and for square
exhaust ports. Well, these headers, as of today, are not fitting 100% yet. I have had to modify the motor mount on the drivers side because
the number 1 tube goes right through half of the motor mount. On the passenger side, I have had to modify the motor mount and make some notches
in the frame for the number 4 and 6 tubes to pass through. The torsion bars are totally in the way so we are going to have to heat the tubes and
try to bend them away from the torsion bars. Once this is done, I can probably get a flat seating surface on the heads. It is close now but not close
enough. Geez, what we do for a hobby!
11MAR04
Its nearing spring and with the nearing of spring comes the opening of the local strips. I can smell the exhaust fumes and burning
rubber already; however, the heads I ordered aren't here yet so each day they are late is another day away from getting to the track.
I ended up ordering the AFR 210 heads with 7/16" studs and milled to 64cc chambers. To help the heads breath, I am incorporating
a super victor jr intake manifold, comp cams roller rockers, and some new valve covers with a proper evacuation system. I am anticipating
we will be at the track by the middle of April and have a chance to try out all the new parts. I'm also going to try to use some new camera
angles to get some more interesting video both for entertainment and for research and development.
12NOV03
Well, been a while since I updated everybody to what is going on with the racing. I took off the Edlebrock carb and replaced
it with a Demon drag race 750 cfm, took off the Mallory Unilite and replaced it with a MSD Billet Distributor, and guess what?
The truck doesn't overheat anymore. We have come up with the thought that perhaps the carb was running way too lean thus causing
the cylinders to overheat. As well, I am getting consistant timing readings now using the MSD Distributor.
Also, I got breathers for the valve covers so I don't have the crank case overpressurization problem that I was having (no more oil
blowing out the dip stick!) I also installed a mini starter and single plane intake manifold. For now I have the torker II on
but I'm most likely going to get a Victor Jr or one of AFR (Air Flow Research) single plane mainifolds. I'm also eyeing the AFR 210cc heads
since these GM 993 casting iron junk heads just aren't flowing quite well enough.
We went to MIR on this past Saturday, 08NOV03. My best run was 12.02 at 109 with a best 60' time of 1.59. It just seems like I'm running
out of breathing room in the high RPM range so I'll be looking forward to some upgrades over the winter. I'll post the time slips soon. Until then
check out the new videos on the videos page. Also, I met up with Greg of Holeshot Performance and learned that
he has a dyno at his shop so we can now get a baseline for the truck. Also, on the videos page you'll find videos of a couple of cars they are working on:
Derek Krein's 11 second blue mustang and the red Roush mustang they are working on which is running in the 10's.
I must say though I have a horror story about the brand new Demon. The truck had a horrible miss from about 2,000-5,000 RPM. Derek noticed
that we had way more fuel dumping on the left venturi versus the right. I took the from float assembly off and the right jet wasn't even finger tight
and the left jet was out and rolling around in the float area. Derek tightened them back up and the truck ran great after that. It just goes
to show that even though something is brand new, it may not be adjusted right. It never hurts to second check!
AUG1803
We have now gone to the track twice. The two tracks in Richmond only allow street cars on
Friday nights so we have been going to North Carolina to the Hertford area. The track
is called the Northeast Dragway and it is an 1/8th mile track. Here is a breakdown of the current
events: Three weeks ago we went for the first time. The truck did ok but we had major starter
problems. We thought it was just heat soak so in the meantime I wrapped the starter and
the mainifold to try and protect it from the heat. We also noticed an oil leak
but i thought maybe it was just the oil pan so i tightened on the bolts a bit.
Well, when we got to the track this past Friday, we noticed that the oil
leak was really bad, the starter was still not turning the engine over when
hot, and we were running into overheating problems. I located the source of the oil
leak to a hole in the oil dipstick from where I put it in. As far as the starter goes,
I think that the stock starter is just too weak and we will need a mini starter.
For cooling, I may try to go back to a pully and use the engine on the water pump
instead of electric drive. We'll see. check out the videos off the media page for
a good look. Our fastest so far is 7.9 at 86 mph in the 1/8th. I just am
making it to 3rd gear at the end of the 1/8th so we should have good 1/4 mile gears.
22Jun03 Updates,
Updates, Updates, well... the battery and the fuel cell are mounted
as well as the bed of course. Fuel lines are also run and the truck
is now operating somewhat with the exception of brakes. The brakes are
not 100% yet but we are doing daily troubleshooting which will end today
with me making the determination of whether or not the stock master
cylinder will work or not. We will see. Goto the media page and look
on the videos page to see the recent videos of the truck. 10Jun03 Been
working on a lot of different issues on the truck. The Trans cooler
is
installed along with the radiator. I'm working on the
gauges, fuel cell, fuel lines, bed, and the brakes. A few more issues
like exhaust will follow. check out the 383 page for the updates!
27Mar03 Got
the 29.5 x 10.5 tires mounted on the 10" rims. I did go with the
M/T tires and the convo pro rims just a smaller size. Welding on the
frame is going well now and i even picked up my own arc welder. I welded
the front mount for the ladder bars and now I am working on welding
the support plates for where the frame pieces come together. Lots of
new parts have been ordered and are awaiting installation such as a
new TCI th-350 trans, B&M hole shot torque convertor, comp cams
292 H cam, and more. See the cam removal and install pics on the Isuzu
page. I've also been working on stripping down the frame and getting
it painted and ready to go. We should be mounting the cab back on the
frame sometime in the next week so for now.... 18Feb03 After
much thought, it seems that the 14 inch wide tire will be too wide for
the frame that we constructed. Looks like we may be going with a 28x10.5
slick instead. I've made all the measurements so the last factor is
the actual tire compounds. We'll see! Updates to the Links section. 24Jan03 Well,
looks like we have determined what the back spacing will be for the
rims. 3.5" should give us about 1.5" off the frame rails.
We are going to go with a 32x14x15 Mickey Thompson slick
to positively plant us to the earth. The rims we have selected are the
Convo
Pro made by Centerline. We are going to start work on modifying
the bed to accomodate the new tires so expect some pics of that. More
to come, until then... my
frozen lake
